Hello from Finland! I have been abroad now for just over two weeks and got a little over three more to go. You may ask, what have I been doing with my time abroad? Well let me tell you. I've been shopping the literal Pinterest girl's dream stores, enjoying the vastness of Finnish nature, mining for amethyst like the crystal girl I am, and best yet.... DRINKING LEGALLY.
I am 19 years old so I can go to the bars and liquor stores here and buy alcohol legally. And I think the Finnish drinking culture is amazing. With this much freedom they've actually created a quite safe drinking culture. Their government is like the "cool parent" who let their teen drink and find their limits within the confines of their supervision. Whereas the United States government is like the parent who was super strict and caused their kid to disobey and explore the extremes of alcohol just because their parent wouldn't let them. Here everyone values the practice of grabbing a taxi or having a designated driver to take people home safe. Driving drunk is way more frowned upon here than in the United States where people are so grossly nonchalant about it. If 18-20 year olds are thinking about drinking in the U.S. their gonna do it whether there is a law put up to stop them or not. It won't stop them. So why not lower the drinking age to 18 and allow teens to be teens intead of giving them misdemeanors and tickets for underage drinking? And hopefully a safer drinking culture would form in the U.S. too.
Anyways, if I could I would recommend everyone party at some point up here in the northern parts of Europe. The sun doesn't set at night so it makes it so much easier to stay up drinking throughout the night into the morning hours. They also have so many fun drinks out here to try. Lots of candy, berry, and fun other flavors. In three weeks when I return to California I will sadly look back on these weeks spent abroad and how fun partying here was. I wish we could all party European style.
